The specific requirements of ELA professional development can be found in the ELA Teacher Qualification Training Guidelines. (Web link) The ELA Teacher Qualification Training Guidelines have helpful information about designations, requirements for ELA teacher qualification and  timelines.

Beginning fall 2007, the ELA Teacher Qualification Training courses will be offered in partnership with the University of Colorado Denver. 

All Courses:

DPS Unit 1 - now - TED 5000: ELA Foundations (1 semester credit) - Beginning Spring 2008, TED 5000: ELA Foundations for 1 semester credit will replace  LLC 5160 Historical and Legal Foundations of Bilingual Education.  Teachers who have previously completed, or who completed LLC 5160 in Fall 2007 are exempt from TED 5000: ELA Foundations. 

DPS Unit 2 - now - LLC 5030 Language and Literacy: Acquisition, Processes and Cognition, Part I

DPS Unit 3 - now - LLC 5820 Techniques in Teaching English as a Second Language

DPS Unit 4 - now - LLC 5770 Effective Literacy Instruction for English Language Learners 

The benefits to teachers are:

  • Count toward a CDE Linguistically Diverse Educator Endorsement
  • Count toward a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction (emphasis Liguistically Diverse Education) at UCDHSC
  • Are classroom-based and learner focused
  • Are innovative and interactive utilizing a hybrid online/face-to-face format

  • Log in as an instructor. 
    • Select your name – Click the gray scroll down box to see the list of names and select yours. (the names are listed in ABC order by last name)

       

      Enter the last 4 digits of your social security number.

       

      Hit the click here after entering password button.  This will take you to the instructor course information.

       

    • ELA Teacher Qualification units are offered in the following order:  (see above for actual UCD course names) Elementary Teachers:  Unit 3-SIOP, Unit 1-ELA Program, Unit 4-Literacy, Unit 2-ELD;  Secondary Teachers:  Unit 3-SIOP, Unit 1-ELA Program, Unit 2-ELD, Unit 4-Literacy

 

2007-2008 Compensation Guidelines:  (This option will apply only to teachers who were designated and successfully completed at least one unit during the entire 2006-2007 school year.)  A letter will be mailed to eligible participants on July 20th.  This letter will include detailed information, as well as, a return request for an Option Response Form.  The teacher compensation option ended May 29, 2008.

 

ASC university credit  and DPS step-grade credit will not be offered to participants for the 2007-2008 school year.  Salary increment using UCD university credit is only available to teachers NOT in ProComp.  Teachers in ProComp must complete a PDU to receive an increase in pay.

 

It is the participant's responsibility to submit the correct forms to Human Resources or ProComp for salary increments.  Please refer to question #48 and #49 in the Frequently Asked Questions document above for more information.
